‘Walk & Talk’ Therapy

Some people may find the thought of face to face counselling indoors a daunting or overwhelming prospect. Others may have tried counselling in conventional environments but found it uncomfortable or wished for a less intensive approach.

I offer an option for ‘walk & talk’ sessions (outdoors, distanced) where appropriate. They are suitable for clients of all ages and fitness levels as you dictate the walking pace and any stops for a break.

Walk & talk Therapy does exactly what it says on the tin. The Counsellor and Client meet at a pre-determined outside appropriate space arranged prior to the session. The session then takes place walking side by side.

For people who spend all day in their home or place of work, walk & talk sessions can be a beneficial and appealing form of therapy. Often the idea of spending another hour sat inside can be off-putting. This type of therapy gives you the opportunity to combine therapy with a walk, gentle exercise, fresh air and nature.

WHERE DO 'WALK & TALK SESSIONS TAKE PLACE?

I use a number of different walking environments and we can discuss which one will be most suitable depending on the time of our walks and your fitness level.

We would collaboratively agree; the pace, where to go and when to take a break, stop, sit or stand to reflect on points raised during the walk and talk session.

INITIAL ASSESSMENT/CONSULTATION

To help us establish if walk & talk sessions are for you, our initial consultation/assessment will take place at the clinic (or at this present time, via Zoom). This also gives us an opportunity to discuss the contract, a contingency plan should there be bad weather on the day of your session, a suitable place for us to meet and walk and also your confidentiality.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Confidentiality is as important with Walk & Talk sessions as it would be with any other type of counselling service on offer. However, when working outside there is the potential for seeing people you might know, or that may know the therapist. In the first session we will discuss how you want to deal with this if it arises.

There is also the issue that if other people are close by they may be able to hear parts of the conversation. This will all be discussed during the initial consultation/assessment

If Walk and Talk therapy sounds like something you would like to try or if you have any questions, get in touch.
